Favorite Literary Artist (Male): Mattew Foley

For the people, by the people!

We recently circulated a survey asking for nominations for various categories of Charleston’s Favorite Creatives.  These folks were not chosen by us, but by the public, and what an honor to be voted in by your colleagues!  We did have a blast going through all the nominations as well as reading all of our winners’ Q&As!  Pretty much all their answers are awesome and hilarious.

MATTHEW FOLEY

Who is most inspiring to you and why?

My fellow local Charleston poets like Derek Berry, Marcus Amaker, Cait Cox, The Fresh Prince of Poetry, Mr. Enlightenment, Courtnay The Poet, and many more.  All these poets are great human beings and all work extremely hard to make the Charleston poetry scene the best it can be.

When you are feeling creatively blocked, what do you do?

When I feel creatively blocked, I get out of the house and go for a walk.  I leave the iPhone and distractions behind and go out into the world with just a pen and a notebook.

Best moment of your life?

The second best moment of my life was proposing to my wife with a poem because I was too broke at the time to buy a ring.  The best moment of my life was when she said yes.

What you wanted to be when you were little?

I’d love to say that I always wanted to be a writer, but I have to admit that there were a few years in middle school when I wanted to be a professional wrestler.  Luckily, that didn’t work out.

What makes you feel alive?

The thrill of getting in front of people and expressing myself, whether it’s performing poetry at an open mic or teaching in my classroom.

What are you most grateful for?

The opportunity to work with young writers as a teacher & poetry coach.  For everything I’ve been able to teach them about writing and performance, they have ended up teaching me ten times as much.

Best advice you were given or that you would like to give to others?

When it comes to being a creative person, think in terms of community.  An artist can’t create and share their work at its highest potential unless there is a supportive community in place.  Help contribute to your local art community and help out other artists because that generosity with certainly be returned to you down the road.

The one thing you can’t live without?

Coffee.  Lots and lots of coffee.

Describe yourself by using only three words.

Proud teacher/poet.

Tell us one quirky thing about you that no one really knows.

I use my car commute time to practice memorizing poems.  If you ever pull up next to me in traffic and it looks like I’m screaming at someone… don’t freak out, I’m just reciting a poem.

Please list your favorite quote.  This could be written by you or someone else.  Please credit it appropriately.

“A writer can do nothing for men and women more necessary, more satisfying, than just simply to reveal to them the infinite possibilities of their own souls.” – Walt Whitman
