People’s Choice Exhibit

If you’ve ever wanted to actually have a say in what artwork goes on a museum wall, then cast your vote in the Gibbes Museum’s “People’s Choice” exhibit. The community-curated exhibition encourages the public to select and share their favorite works of art. The top five works chosen by the public will be on display from May 3 to September 15.

To kick off the event, the Gibbes chose and invited some noted figures in Charleston’s community to talk about the importance of art and to discuss their favorite works.
“Museums are repositories of visual experience. We can connect to artists in a special way. A museum is a time machine where we connect in a personal way with artists who have long since passed away,” says painter Leo Twiggs, one of the local celebrities chosen to get to be a part of the “People’s Choice” exhibit website. It’s quite interesting to read the varied answers of this diverse group of local celebs and learn how art has affected them. Among them were folks like Mayor Joe Riley, chef Mike Lata, jazz musician Charlton Singleton, Post and Courier reporter Adam Parker, painter Robert Lange, poet Marjory Wentworth, the Reverend Joseph A. Darby, and Art Mag’s publisher Olivia Pool, myself, and others.

But this exhibit is really about the people, the public! That means YOU! The Gibbes wants to know what you like and why. Get involved with your local museum and creative community! All you have to do is log on to
gibbespeopleschoice.org and cast your own vote!
