Brett Carron of Indigo & Cotton

In nearly every apparel store on King Street, men shuffle around the little corners of men’s sections, looking at the same wrinkle-proof Chinos and patch-pocket Oxfords, trying to find at least one unique item.

While the menswear sections of the big box department stores feel a bit too cookie-cutter for me, Indigo and Cotton on Cannon Street feels like a place made for men to shop. Owner Brett Carron’s design background has played a crucial role in helping him to create a tasteful, unique store with an unmistakably masculine vibe.

On the walls, Carron has placed his collection of antique toy racing boats. Outside the dressing rooms, there are art deco theatre seats so the ladies can wait patiently on the gents, for a change. Out front, covered in colorful ties and suede shoes, is an old western safe big enough to crush Wiley Coyote. Everywhere you look are exclusive items for the southern gentleman that you can’t find anywhere else in the Lowcountry.

Carron, a humble, yet classic entrepreneurial type, has done or can handle, almost every part of being in business for himself. “I’m here everyday, whether I’m out front taking pictures of a new product or over there sweeping the floors.”

Talk to Carron and he’ll tell you everything about each and every item, hand-picked by him during his bi-annual pilgrimage to New York. Want to know about the sunglasses in the corner with the military grade spec and lifetime insurance? He can give you all the details. Just want to buy some unique socks and be on your way? He’s okay with that too, although you’ll probably fall in love with something else and want to stick around a little longer. Whatever the case, Carron is never too busy to help you or answer any questions.
