John Duckworth: Awake
November 7 - December 21, 2014
34 Prioleau Street, Charleston SC 29403

City Gallery at Waterfront Park will be transformed by local artist John Duckworth in his installation and exhibition titled Awake.

The title AWAKE stems from the translation of the word “Buddha” into “awake” or “one who has
awakened to his or her true nature”. Duckworth’s ‘Tunes and Whispered’ series, the focal point of the
exhibition, explores a relationship between Western contemporary art and Eastern philosophies and
iconography, providing a platform for cross-cultural exchange

This immersive experience will feature paintings and video installations exploring the theme. A viewing room (The Buddha Chapel), with seating to encourage meditation, and a lounge area will be specially constructed for the exhibition. On the second floor of the City Gallery, Duckworth’s iconic Abstract Landscapes will be on display, as well as The Cube, a room that explores the artist’s daily life, and The Laboratory, which will feature new works in the ‘Tunes and Whispered’ series.

Opening night: Friday, November 7, 2014, 5 – 8 pm

Tuesday – Friday, 10 am to 6 pm
Saturday – Sunday, 12 noon to 5 pm

The artist will be present daily, with regular time slots for performance. Look for expanded, collaborative programming throughout the exhibition too!
