Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School of Charleston will hold its upcoming session called “Zahrah, Star of the Desert,” a Middle-Eastern themed drawing event featuring Zahrah and her sword and belly dance performances. The two-hour drawing class will feature several figure drawing sessions ranging from 5-20 minutes in length, marvelous music provided by DJ Cassidy of Jericho Advisors and lots of terrific prize giveaways from Artist & Craftsman. In addition, there will be exhibit of handmade tribal belly dance jewelry by Simply Becoming Designs, and libations fueled by Cathead Vodka. All of this will take place amidst the Middle-Eastern ambiance created by the 827 Annex. Among our remaining sponsors are Lava Salon and Holy City Tattooing Collective.
What in the world is Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School? Dr. Sketchy’s has been dubbed the world’s premiere alternative drawing movement where underground performers become the models. Back in 2005, artist Molly Crabapple found herself bored with repetitive, uninteresting figure drawing classes. Not long after, out of a small bar in Brooklyn, the first Dr. Sketchy’s was born. Today, there are over 100 branches in cities all over the world. The Charleston branch was opened in September of 2011 by Olivia Pool.
Seating is limited and guests are encouraged to arrive early for the best seats. Please come with your own drawing and/or painting materials. Non-artists are also welcome to join in the fun and watch the spectacular live performances.
“Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School is a drawing event like no other. We love mixing the visual and the performing arts, as our figure models are usually talented local performers. Dr. Sketchy’s is so much more than a drawing class. All of the events are set around a specific theme – from the model/performer to the décor to the music… and we love encouraging attendees to creatively add to the mix in any way they feel inspired to do so! Expect alternative, sexy, and unique performance art pieces as well as quirky, fun, drawing competitions with other artists. Come get sketchy with us!”
-Miss O, the Director of the Charleston Branch of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School.
