Hilton Head Island and Bluffton harbor a long list of accomplished artists in many media. And collectors have noticed.
But it can be hard for island-area artists to consistently and effectively reach interested collectors – and for locally oriented collectors to see their neighbors’ creations. Hilton Head Art Store(.com) is the missing channel: an online presentation, catalog and transaction solution to help local artists – aspiring or established – share their work with the public.
“We have an incredibly creative community,” says Mira Scott, who has operated Picture This Gallery since 1985. “Our goal is to help them succeed, not starve. Hilton Head Art Store also benefits collectors, who will know exactly where to find and purchase works from artists they know – along with those they’d like to know better.

Scott’s partner in Hilton Head Art Store is Jeff Urell, owner of AEI Marketing, who explains, “We’ve learned that it’s often hard for creative entrepreneurs to both produce new work and manage their marketing. Many don’t want to turn to a national or international online art-market site, where they and their work can easily get lost.

With help from experts (like FastSpring to name an example), however, this can be mitigated. Our new online store will allow even the technology- and time-challenged to showcase and sell their creations, within an online community that reflects their physical community.
“It’s a local art gallery that’s always open, with fresh work and easy, reliable transactions.”
Local artists join Hilton Head Art Store by committing to a six-month membership and agreeing to market only original works and artist-created (or -supervised), signed reproductions of their original works. Each artist can display five pieces, rotating in new works – if desired – each month, or when an original offering sells. Each artist has space for a short biography and an artist’s statement, along with the ability to enter information about each work displayed, including such details as local pick-up or shipping options.
Artists upload this information and images of their artwork by simply filling in blanks in an online form. They set their own prices – although Scott will ensure pricing falls within reasonable limits. Artists have both email and telephone support to answer any questions along the way. And Urell says he will provide a list of recommended, local vendors for those artists who might need help with peripheral details – such as photographing their works, packing and shipping.
“We’ll offer this turnkey solution – display site, artist information, search functions and online shopping cart – to local artists for $35 per month and 15 percent of sales,” Urell says. “And when we say ‘local,’ we mean local. This exclusive service is only available to artists living or working in southern Beaufort County.”
Collectors see a rotating slide show of artists’ works when they visit Hillton Head Art Store. They can search by medium – such as painting, sculpture, photography, etc. – artist name, recent postings and other descriptive keywords. Collectors can visit the gallery anywhere and anytime they have an Internet connection. They can purchase works with confidence, using a secure shopping cart, knowing they have 10 days to review and return any purchase for a refund.
