The Solust music festival is bringing some fresh faces to Charleston for their summer celebration on Daniel Island on July 3rd, and we had the great pleasure to chat with singer-songwriter Rachel Brown about her upcoming performance.
This New Yorker has strong ties to Charleston. Her grandfather was a Charlestonian with eight sisters. Much of her family is still here, and she visits frequently. Her mother is the gifted and hardworking bridal designer Amsale, who was featured at Charleston Fashion Week this year. Brown’s grandmother, Lydia Seabrooke Brown, was Charleston’s first black female entrepreneur. Continuing her family’s tradition of strong women, Brown graduated from Harvard, where she studied filmmaking, and has resolutely pursued her music career in New York City. She was recently written up in the New Yorker on the occasion of her new EP, where they liken her “uncanny voice” to Erykah Badu and Norah Jones
Take a listen to her new EP “The Band.” Her sound is undeniably cheerful and lovely, and will transport you to a happier place that feels like a dream vacation. It is bright and bubbly, but deepening with age and experience, influenced by her familial roots in Ethiopia, Bermuda, and Charleston. She taught herself to play guitar, and then the ukulele, because she loved its pretty, summery sound. She learned chord by chord, and began writing songs for the uke too. She is a perfect fit for Solust, a music festival that celebrates summer as they aim to create an environment for chilling out and getting down by the sea.
Brown will take the stage with some local support, bass player Leonard Felder and percussionist Praylonn Prince. She goes on just before the headlining band Love & Theft–here is the lineup:
Jamisun (5-5:45pm)
Volcanoes in the Kitchen (6-6:45pm)
Atlas Road Crew (7-7:45pm)
Chase Martin (8-8:45pm)
Rachel Brown (9-9:20pm)
Love and Theft (9:30- until)
Catch Rachel Brown while she’s in town, otherwise you’ll have to get yourself up to New York City.
