ART PREVIEW

by Matt Mill

This will be the first Redux Art Auction hosted in their new home at 1056 King Street.

Snagging quality art at reasonable prices—drink and food in hand—while supporting a cause you believe in, puts art auctions on the radar of many sharp collectors.

Wednesday, November 15, marks the sold-out 15th Annual Art Auction at Redux Contemporary Art Center, with over 115 local, regional, and national emerging and established artists contributing their works. Collectively, these artists are the reason Redux is here today, and they each have a connection to the Charleston arts community.

“We’re celebrating our bighearted artists as they help us raise money to keep Redux serving our ever-expanding art community,” says Kirsten Moran, Redux Board Treasurer and Co-Chair of the Art Auction Committee. “Come—and bid generously—to be a part of this cool and creative group of people who seriously know how to give back.”

Redux prides itself on serving artists, educating the community, and keeping contemporary art thriving in the Lowcountry. All proceeds from the auction are reinvested into Redux’s programming to foster and cultivate contemporary art and artists in Charleston and the greater Southeast region.

FOR THE WIN

“Auctions are a wonderful opportunity to discover new artists that might not be on your radar,” says gallery owner Anne Siegfried of The George Gallery. “And an auction can be a great place to get a piece by an artist whose work is hard to come by, so look and see which artists are participating.”

In fact, art auctions have been responsible for growing a number of art collections in Charleston. It’s how Mike and Michele Seekings landed a new Nathan Durfee after going toe to toe for the piece, how Allison Williamson added a meaningful Brian Coleman to her wall, and how many young collectors, like Brandon and Marion Blount, began to build a solid foundation for surrounding their life with highly regarded art.

“Just make sure you do a little bit of homework first,” says Siegfried.

And to help with this homework, we’ve put together a study guide of sorts. Below is a preview of some selected pieces available in this year’s live and silent auction. In addition to great art, you can look forward to sipping and sampling a variety of provisions from local restaurants and libation-makers who have been just as generous. Leah Suárez & Friends will be performing and make sure to enjoy a signature ‘fifteen’ cocktail mixed by the Cocktail Bandits.
