News > Review: Jordan Igoe’s CD Release Show

There was a kind of coronation Friday night at The Royal American as Jordan Igoe took the stage for her album release show.  Hundreds of people packed the venue to celebrate the brilliance that is How To Love, Igoe’s first album.  A palpable buzz could be felt from both the anticipation and the convergence of so much creativity coming to fruition and it was exciting to see a musical milestone happen for one of Charleston’s finest songwriters.

Almost everyone who played or sang on the album was up on stage, from guitar hero Mackie Boles to Rachel Kate Gillon and Elise TestoneAaron Firetag and Charlie Thompson added sweet mandolin and pedal steel parts respectively, giving Igoe’s songs the right flavor- a mix of classic country and rock that is lyric-driven and deliciously complex, as if Patsy Cline was in the Pixies.  They played most of the songs from the album, which has a shocking number of anthems and what could easily be radio hits someday.  That is a lot of goodness to put on one album.

Jordan sang an especially tender song with her sister, Jessica Daisi Igoe, about a friend who had taken her own life.  “Rosetta” almost brought on tears as they sang, “I loved her as many did love her.  I’m sorry she didn’t think so.”

Igoe looked stunning in a custom-made vintage-inspired frock by local designer Rachelle Rose as she juggled her roles as bandleader and singer, switching from guitar to keys a few times and putting on a show that was riveting to watch and listen to.  There were some moments where Igoe and Boles musical interplay was just magic.  This is why I go see live music, for nights like this.  To experience this kind of beauty.

Igoe’s songs about self-love are a Valentine for us all.
