Dianne Reeves and the quartet of Peter Martin on piano, Peter Sprague on guitar, Reginald Veal on bass, and Terreon Gully on drums gave us everything we could want in a performance at the Cistern last night. Martin, Sprague, Veal, and Gully opened the night as we waited for Reeves to appear on stage.

After making her entrance, Reeves invited us to sit back and relax with the “full moon, full hearts, and lots of music.”

Reeves sang many of her classic hits, which had the audience jamming in their seats the way Spoleto audiences jam: with slight head nodding and discreet toe tapping to the rhythm of the beat. She alternated her songs between fast paced to slow tempos and layered well-known verses with scat solos that showed the range of her voice.

Reeves has been the liveliest of performers in the Wells Fargo Jazz Series in the Cistern Yard at College of Charleston so far this season, and this five time Grammy Award winner did not disappoint the audience of 2,000 people that she drew to last night’s performance.
