Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock and Roll Photography

September 21 – December 30, 2012

The Gibbes Museum of Art opened two incredible exhibitions on September 21, and luckily they’re here to stay until December 30. Both Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock and Roll Photography and Willard Hirsch: Charleston’s Sculptor are worth your visit to the Gibbes, but at Art Mag we can’t contain our excitement about the Rock n’ Roll in the Main Gallery. Forty images of musicians, songwriters, and performers, taken by over twenty accomplished photographers, examine the cultural relationship between our musical history and the art of photography from the last five decades. You can enjoy this exhibit simply by purchasing admission to the museum, getting a ticket to one of the curator-led tours, the “Art and Fame” lecture series, or taking advantage of the special “Little Bit Country, Little Bit Rock n’ Roll” package at nearby Planters Inn to make a mini-vacation out of your love for Rock n’ Roll pics. —CBH

Pulse Dome Project: Art and Design by Don ZanFagna

This special event at the Halsey will showcase the recently discovered works of 80+ year-old artist Don ZanFagna. His family uncovered a significant body of the artist’s works in his home, and some of them now make up the exhibition Pulse Dome. The pieces address the relationship between people and their earth, imagining a future way of living in sync with the environment. The works show several renderings of ZanFagna’s dream for a sustainable form of architecture in art mediums such as paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, and 3-D models. —CBH
