JahSun

“A Hoe Mama is a woman who has consciously decided to take a spiritual path and plant seeds of love along the way. She is a gardener of people… She is you, me, every man, woman and child on this earth. She is in all of us,” JahSun said as we discussed his new body of work, Hoe Mama.

The controversial name isn’t controversial for JahSun at all. He explained the gardening tool depicted in his paintings is used for breaking through rocky terrain covering up fertile ground. The tool is a reminder for us to dig deeper into ourselves, plant seeds and cultivate our inner garden. “A Hoe Mama is spiritually fierce and she encourages others to be so as well. She’s also extremely gentle. A seed won’t manifest into something if you don’t have diligence, patience and love,” he said.

Hoe Mama has two initiatives: to raise money for the nonprofit Drop the Bucket, which brings fresh drinking water to African villages through the sale of autographed prints, and The Stillness Project, which encourages Hoe Mama followers to take two minutes each day just to be still.

The Hoe Mama body of work consists of canvas pieces as well as prints created through digital painting. Future Hoe Mama projects include an animated series and up to 35 more paintings. Prior to the Hoe Mama project, JahSun illustrated his first children’s book, Indigo Blume and the Garden City. It will be interesting to watch where his creative muse will lead him next.

JahSun is an inspiration to the art community with his positive message and presence. He reminded me: “Dig deeper. How far does the rabbit hole go? Don’t be afraid to tumble and find out.” Join the movement. Become a Hoe Mama.
