Lauren Mitterer of Wildflour Pastry

Downtown Charleston is a whole lot sweeter thanks to Lauren Mitterer’s shop, WildFlour Pastry.

As a studio art major with a concentration in photography at the University of Virginia, Mitterer knew she wanted to do something creative after graduation, but not necessarily in her field of study. “It just kind of happened,” she laughs when describing how she became the culinary artist she is today. She attended the Culinary Institute of America in New York and graduated with a degree in Baking and Pastry in 2004. After traveling around for a little bit, she found herself in Charleston working as the head pastry chef at Red Drum Gastropub, where you can still find her delectable desserts.

After four and a half years at Red Drum, Mitterer was ready to do her own thing. “I wanted to focus a little more on the artistic side – wedding cakes and things like that. I found a spot I liked and just went for it!” Thus, the birth of WildFlour Pastry, and with mouth-watering treats such as double chocolate cookies, raspberry and nutella turnovers, and sticky buns that people actually line up to buy, it’s safe to say that everyone is happy that she went for it.

While visiting her shop is a definite must, Mitterer will also come to you for any event where you want to satisfy even the most insatiable sweet tooth. “Something people may not know,” she says, “is that we will customize any event for you, whether it’s just a small dinner in your home, a birthday where you need a cake, or a cocktail party where you need bite-sized treats.” Mitterer makes it as easy as possible to bring a little bit of sweetness to our lives, and we aren’t complaining!
