Vinho Verde: The Young Wine

Move over Argentina… It’s Portugal’s time! Portuguese vino is some of the best-valued juice in the wine world right now. They have been struggling to actually receive international attention for their juice, but it seems that times are a-changin’.  This means that the wine is starting to be more widely distributed without having taken a price hike yet – emphasis on the ‘yet’.

Some of the most approachable and just simply delicious juice coming out of Portugal is Vinho Verde. Vinho Verde literally means “green wine” but is translated as “young wine” and is produced in the very north Minho region, on the Atlantic Ocean near the Spanish border. No need to wait – drink this juice within a year of bottling.

Vinho Verde isn’t going to be a super complex, life-changing wine that makes you question the reality of human existence (that’s what DRC* is for), but if you want awesome, slightly fizzy deliciousness that typically retails for less than $10, then this is your gig. Also, the slightly lower alcohol content (approximately 10%) means that not only can you crush a bottle by yourself but it’s also perfect for those steamy, summer days here in Charleston.

Enjoy!

* Editor’s note: If you’re like me and said, “What the heck is DRC?” don’t worry, I asked the question for all of us: Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC) is an estate in Burgundy, France that is widely considered one of the world’s greatest wine producers.
