Andrew Walker of Entropy Ensemble
The word entropy is basically defined as the “degree of disorder or uncertainty in a system.” Musician and entrepreneur Andrew Walker likes to explain it as being the “naturally occurring expansion and unraveling of the universe.” Thus, when put together, the words Entropy Ensemble could be interpreted as “an organized system of chaos.”
Andrew Walker hopes that is what people appreciate about Entropy Ensemble’ s music. Entropy Ensemble is an instrumental group comprised of musicians from very different backgrounds, from classical training to jazz. But they all share Entropy’s goal: to make “good music” that is genre-bending. With open, non-discriminating musical minds, these artists strive to be versatile in their music by using piano, violin, cello, bass, and percussion to create everything from their own original pieces to covering bands as complex as Radiohead. Along with Javier Orman, Lonnie Root, Ben Wells, and Stuart White, the band has been touring nationally as well as locally since 2009. Founder and developer of Entropy Ensemble, Walker explains that he wants the group to embody what he calls the naturally occurring inter-connectedness between different music genres and art forms.
In addition to the Ensemble, Walker also runs Entropy Arts, a company that created the bi-annual Jail Break Festivals. These multi-media festivals incorporate many artistic disciplines—visual, performing, wearable, etc. The Jail Break festivals purposefully blur the lines between art mediums in the same way that Entropy Ensemble experiments with music.
Walker is proud that both Entropy entities continue to be involved in the celebration and collaboration between artists and art forms in the local Charleston area. Jail Break 3 is scheduled to take place at the Old City Jail on April 14. Entropy Ensemble will be featured in a number of collaborations at the Hippodrome Theatre during the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in May of this year. Both Jail Break 3 and Piccolo, according to Walker, are excellent opportunities for locals and tourists alike to see the real Charleston.
