Remark Landscape Architecture

Aesthetic Ecology: the idea that original design should mimic its natural surroundings and reflect the land it inhabits. This term was coined by husband and wife landscaping duo J.R. and Holly Kramer and describes Remark Landscape Architecture to a tee. Remark focuses on creating environments that are pleasing to the eye, functional, and locally conscious.

The motto of aesthetic ecology isn’t just a style, but a methodology of incorporating the environment without harming or overwhelming it. Simplistic yet potent themes and local perennials are found in Remark’s projects. J.R. and Holly focus on cultivating relationships with local artisans and nurseries as well.

Both Holly and J.R. worked in landscaping before opening their firm. Working with three-person green projects to large engineering firms has given them a unique skill set. “We know a little bit about a lot of things,” J.R. says.

Getting a feel for a space, rather than just noting logistics is what sets Remark apart from other landscaping businesses. J.R. explains, “We listen to our clients and the ideas they have for the space. It helps us if we see the style that’s shown in their houses so we can meet their needs as much as possible.

This specific type of architecture is somewhat specialized. “Instead of designing a free standing building, which is static, we’re dealing with a dynamic atmosphere. We try to emphasize nature, not recreate it,” J.R. explains.

The number-crunching science of architecture is not always associated with art, but at Remark, it’s a major driving force with how they conceptualize a space.

“Our approach is similar to any art project. It’s all about space and atmosphere,” Holly says. They begin each project by observing the space and trying to mimic the nature that already surrounds it. They utilize form, balance, rhythm, and color- just like any piece of artwork.

But don’t let their artistic approach fool you; this team focuses on practicality and stewardship in all of their projects as well. They take into account the function of each space and find a way to make it more inviting. Call on Remark when you are ready to remake your own space!
