Plein Air Painters of the Southeast Return to Charleston
Local galleries Horton Hayes Fine Art, Hagan Fine Art, Smith Killian Fine Art and Galerie on Broad will host Plein Air Painters of the Southeast Returns to Charleston from June 1 – 22. Their hard work will be celebrated with opening receptions in the galleries on June 1, from 6 – 8 pm.
This alliance of professional artists is committed to continuing the tradition of plein air painting – where an artist will set up an easel and canvas and paint out-of-doors, on location. Plein air painting is tricky, as the light and conditions can change very quickly. Artists must paint efficiently to capture the passing light. Light is one of the most important elements of a work of art as it affects every object in a composition, the shadows, the tones and values of colors. There’s also nature to contend with – unexpected rain showers, heat, humidity, insects… Although it can be very rewarding, it is a challenging endeavor to say the least.
Back in 2001, Dee Beard Dean and a handful of other painters, founded Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAP-SE) to celebrate, as well as educate the public, about the plein air tradition. Camaraderie was a fringe benefit, as artists learned from one another and embarked on group outings or projects. Surrounding oneself with other like-minded individuals can only help to develop the creative ‘muscle.’
We’re excited for PAP-SE’s return to Charleston with their first exhibition here since 2001. Members will paint the streetscapes and landscapes, the architecture and people of the Lowcountry. The work produced during those days will launch their newest collective body of work.
PAP-SE intends to make this an annual event in Charleston.
