Detta Cutting Zimmerman

Detta Cutting Zimmerman is an extremely dynamic, hard working, and inspirational artist. What is so fascinating and special about an artist like Zimmerman is her wide range of talent and extraordinary way of appealing to a variety of audiences.

Zimmerman was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. Her art career began when she was just six years old. When her sister’s drawing was accepted to Jack and Jill, a children’s magazine, Zimmerman was inspired to submit her own artwork. The magazine sent her drawing back. They assumed her mom had drawn over her picture, because they could not believe that a six year old could produce such a skilled drawing. Zimmerman was upset to hear that her drawing was declined but later realized that “it was a backwards compliment, my mother never touched my drawing.” Zimmerman has focused on developing her artistic skills ever since.

Zimmerman moved forward with this positive attitude. She graduated from commercial art school in Omaha and afterward spent five years taking life-drawing lessons. She went on to study art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and earned her BFA at College of Charleston. At CofC she took an architecture class, which helped with her drawings and later her paintings of historic Charleston buildings. After 20 years of producing remarkable pen and ink commercial drawings, Zimmerman was ready to transition to another passion: rendering buildings and still life images in vibrant colors. Her bright, playful Charleston cityscapes and beach scenes fill the walls of the Pink House Gallery.

Zimmerman describes her artistic career as “always evolving.” She draws inspiration from artists such as Van Gogh, N.C. Wyeth, Delacroix, and many others. Zimmerman is part-owner of the Pink House Gallery, housed in the oldest standing tavern building in the South, (circa 1690). She exhibits with various galleries throughout Charleston and continues to evolve as an artist, mother, and wife.
