Laura Ball

Laura Ball is a musician who thrives on uniting her community with music, passion, and education. This born-and-bred Charleston gal pursued her BFA in Music and Spanish in Washington, DC and at the College of Charleston, and then earned her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College in Washington state. After her rigorous study, she’s brought all that passion and knowledge home to Charleston.

Ball is bringing the community in on the fun with UNED!TED, “A Concert Series with Laura Ball and Friends.” In its third season, the UNED!TED series is a study in Ball’s own artistic biography. The first concert honors her father’s European roots (Beatles, Bach & Beer); the second, her mother’s (USO Revival); the third represents the generational divide between parent and child (Songs of Freedom); and the final concert presents Ball’s own voice (The American Songbook).

UNED!TED is in residence at the Charleston Library Society, “which makes it automatically playful, because we are already breaking the ground rule of a library—it’s fun to make noise in the library!” Ball pulls in exciting local musicians to collaborate, and they are an inclusive bunch. “Making new friends, new connections between mediums, keeps it fresh,” she says. Ball goes on to say, “while musicians might all speak the same language, there are SO many different dialects!”

Preserving live music is a passion of Ball’s. “You can hear the magic, things that are edited out in the age of digital media,” she says, “it is essential to preserve the live performance, the craft, and make the music personal.” The musicians approach each concert with a honed craft, and invite the audience to create along with them. “Your iPod won’t give you a heartfelt performance!”

We love that UNED!TED presents another fantastic opportunity to engage in Charleston’s progressive musical community. Each concert lasts one hour, and tickets are only $20. Ball strives to make each concert unique, and engage other local businesses like breweries, restaurants, retailers, and more. There are three more UNED!TED concerts this season—go see them all!
