Piccolo Spoleto
Piccolo Spoleto literally means “little Spoleto” and this is the local component to the larger international festival. Piccolo focuses on local and regional acts, many of which are in open-air venues all over town. Think fringe theatre, storytelling, poetry, dance, music, visual arts, etc. If you are looking for things that are either inexpensive or free, or family-friendly, or just out-of-the-box and local, then you’re going to love what they have to offer!
Piccolo has hundreds of different events all over town, but there are a few biggies that you should mark your calendars for. The Farmers Market at Marion Square is overflowing with local food and craft vendors, fine artists, and tons of activities for kids. The Sunset Serenade, a beautiful classical music concert, taking place behind the US Customs House, will feature the West Side Story this year. There will be a jazz picnic at Hampton Park on June 1, and then on June 9, the park will also host Piccolo’s big finale party featuring live reggae and Motown music.
In many ways, 2013 is a historical year for Piccolo because it marks the last year that Ellen Dressler Moryl will be involved. Moryl is the founding director of the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the creator of both the Piccolo and the Moja festivals. Thank you, Ellen, for all your hard work in helping Charleston become the celebrated arts destination it has become.
