Stars Rooftop and Grill

Chef Nathan Thurston is lighting a fire on King Street. Stars Restaurant Rooftop and Grill Room is bringing a concept to Charleston that the West Coast has enjoyed for years. The newly renovated, three-story restaurant is “absolutely focused on live fire cooking,” a challenging technique. “Not only is it the most primitive form of cooking, the food does actually taste better,” say Thurston.

When the ownership came to Thurston with the concept, he immediately began researching. To find a grill that would do everything he wanted, he literally had to invent it himself. There is nothing like this grill in town, or anywhere else in the world, for that matter.

And he only got six feet in which to do it.

The Grill

  • A rotisserie, for chicken, leg of lamb, rabbit, eggplant
  • A grate, for steaks and chops
  • A moveable grate that can be raised or lowered over a wood fire, specially designed for seafood and vegetables
  • A firewall, perfect for ember roasted onions and peppers.

The seafood and veggie side of the grill is the larger side, as the menu leans heavily towards the “garden” and “shore and stream” side of things.

The “garden” section of the menu will be strictly vegetables, and promises to be one of the most vegetarian and vegan friendly menus in town. “Shore and stream” features the standout Stars Lobster & Grits, with a whole lobster and Geechie Boy Grits, from Edisto Island (Geechie Boy makes the best grits around, I swear!)

The Stars Lobsters & Grits

Stars will serve nightly dinner, and weekend brunch, with in-house pastries, “killer buttermilk biscuits,” a wild boar bacon BLT with a fried egg, and a brioche wrapped flounder that we’re dying to try. Desserts get the full treatment too. Thurston is particularly excited about the smoked chocolate s’more pie-their version of the fireside delight every camper grew up with.

Thurston is confident that they’ve got it all just right. “I feel really good about the food we’re offering, the price, the quality. I’ve got a great team in place and a great kitchen,” he says. Oh, did we mention the one and only 360-degree view from the rooftop bar? It’s about as close as you can come to the Stars. Pun intended.
